THE BEST OF 2016

Ashutosh K Gupta

As promised, here’s the best of Piknic’s 2016 season. We put together the best 22 moments of the year, to remind you all of this magical summer:

1. RECORD ATTENDANCE FOR THE FIRST PIKNIC

You came out in force for the first Piknic of the year. To call you “plentiful” would an understatement. We’re talking about a RECORD crowd at Piknic, baby. That’s something. Over 13,500 Piknic lovers came to celebrate the start of the season with their traditional buckets under the Calder. What an impressive sight!

2. THE 3RD STAGE

Adding a third stage for our first event of the season was a huge success. The feedback was universally positive. We loved everything about it: the extra space, the music, the party people and especially the decorations. It was almost like Piknic’s earliest events! Maybe we’ll do it again?

3. FOUR TET

Four Tet was long awaited and he didn’t disappoint. Look at this video and reminisce. A huge thanks to our phone that died right at the peak of the party. #byePhone

4. UNLIMITED MUSICAL PEDAL-BOATS

The addition of “unlimited musical pedal-boats” was clearly a hit! No lie, it was the new attraction that everyone was talking about. It was wonderful seeing all of those happy people gliding on swan lake while listening to their choice of music, throughout the summer.

5. THE POWER RANGER

We’re always surprised to see the costumes you lot come up with. But above all else, we’ve got to shout out whoever came out in the full Power Ranger kit, that was SOMETHING ELSE. Plus, we saw him a couple of times throughout the season. Congrats on the idea and the stamina (that couldn’t have been easy in the heat). #gogopowerrangers

6. THE NEW BURRITO BOWL

We dined on this new offering from La Mangeoire practically every Sunday. Well worth the stop!Image title

7. CREW LOVE

We loved them, enough said. This gang of best buds spent June 26th dancing on stage and taking turns behind the decks. Let it be said: Soul Clap, Wolf + Lamb and Nick Monaco know how to start a party!

8. LOUISAHHH (IN THE RAIN)

We’ll never forget Louisahhh’s crazy set and the rain that came down on us right in the middle of it. It was just enough to cool us down, and make the crowd go crazy before hitting the dance floor twice as hard. There was even a mosh pit!

9. FLORALIES

Let’s not forget our two very special Piknics at Jardins des Floralies. Each time, it was like taking a one-day tropical vacation thanks to those trees and that lush grass!

10. PETIT PIKNIC IN COLLABORATION WITH CHROMATIC JUNIOR

Four Petit Piknic in collaboration with Chromatic Junior took place this summer as part of our regular Piknic programming. It was great to welcome all the families who came to have fun and enjoy the team’s various activities.

11. AN EMPLOYEE GOT A CALDER TATTOO

Then there was the time an employee showed up with The Calder tattooed on his leg. Love the team spirit! #piknicloveImage title

12. ALIX' SET

To this day, we’re still raving about that set. How could we forget that mix of the Lion King theme? Or the one with a choir? #genius Listen to it again and again.

13. THE SKY

We got a treat a couple of times this year. Every sunset the Internet is filled with amazing photos to try to capture the moment! A VIRAL PHENOMENON as we say in the biz. #skyporn #mtlmoments

14. DOUBLE RAINBOW

August 21st was a rainy one. But to reward us, Mother Nature came through with something special. A sick double rainbow (and the photos never do those justice) and a sunset that lit up the Calder like never before. Sometimes, a rainy Piknic turns into an incredible moment!Image title

15. CLAPTONE

September 3rd, Claptone put on his white gloves, his hat and his mask to kick off our triple Piknic. What a performance! Who knows if it was the Claptone effect or just luck of the draw, but everyone was clapping and cheering on beat. #clapclapclap

16. A MARRIAGE PROPOSAL

We were there: there was a marriage proposal at Piknic! Nothing less. If the young lady wanted a discrete, one on one proposal in a field, well that didn’t happen. Best of luck to the happy couple!

17. MISSTRESS BARBARA (TWO TIMES)

September 4th, everyone came through for the set of the summer: Misstress Barbara! We’ve got ot say, we can’t imagine a Piknic season without her! And those who wanted more got a special treat this year, to the demand of one and all, Misstress came back for a second time, delivering a special Bye-bye Calder Piknic set at our goodbye event. Never too much Misstress

18. JULIA GOVOR

Behind that angelic aura, this tiny DJ left us flabbergasted by her amazing techno and crazy dance steps on September 11th. She didn’t stop for a single second! Image title

19. DJ HARVEY

We caught a wicked high listening to him play. Seriously, the man is a machine. We’d even call him a LEGEND. We went through every style: hip-hop, electro, disco and house! A real renaissance man that Harvey. Easily one of the best sets of the summer at Piknic.

20. THE IGLOOFEST DAY

Igloofest day is a classic. Who can forget the artificial snow, an ice logo and Yetis in September? September 25th was #magic. Image title

21. ELLEN ALLIEN

We can’t get over her. Ellen Allien is clearly the queen of Techno!

22. UNDERGROUND RESISTANCE PRES. DEPTH CHARGE

Underground Resistance Presents Depth Charge came through Piknic during the Red Bull Music Academy Piknic special. No doubt, this was one of our best shows in all of Piknic’s 14 year history. It’s like they threw a spell on the crowd and were controlling us telepathically, we just couldn’t help but dance with the crowd. #powerful
