INFOPROG | SEPTEMBER 2019
September 1-2
Piknic is rolling into September with the second half of MEG Festival, immediately following the first two nights on Friday August 30th and Saturday August 31st. The very next day, on Sunday September 1st, DeRic Frey (QC) will warm things up at the Piknic stage with some melodic, techy sounds ahead of Misstress Barbara (QC)’s beloved, annual Piknic pilgrimage – it just wouldn’t be Labor Day weekend without her. Meanwhile, BAVSS - Bar à Vinyl Soundsystem (QC) will present the Boisé stage, as Nico Sé and Seb Fauteux (QC) bring the same crate-digging vibe that powered Montreal nightlife institution the Bleury, right after Saudade (QC) kicks things off with some dubby, sonic abstractions on an electronica tip.
You’ll want to save energy for Monday September 2nd however, as Labour Day at the Piknic stage starts with the sounds of electronica maverick Robert Robert (QC)’s gentle sonic tapestries, followed by Bellaire (FR)’s jazzy tracks, both guaranteed to get you on the floor. Then, French duo Bon Entendeur (FR) will present a special DJ set full of groovy twists and turns, with keen cinematic references and French Touch beats, keeping the energy pumping for a magnificent crescendo to this four-day extravaganza. Over at the Boisé stage, Dr Love (QC) will start things off with some smoothness, thanks to an unparalleled selection of deep cuts and crowd favourites, before Montreal’s returning queen of bass Vilify (QC) lands straight from Berlin to the delight of her fans. Finally, DjRUM (UK) will take us home with his unique fusion of bass weight and organic beats.
September 8th
It’s all about Techno at Piknic stage on September 8th, as Berghain’s Ben Klock (DE) headlines with his sophisticated take on the hottest sounds of the European underground. Fans of deep, dubby, next level beats won’t want to miss this one! Ahead of his headlining set, CMD (QC) will start the day’s party off right – if you remember her amazing Off-Piknic performance with Nina Kravtiz last year, you know you’re in for something special! For a very different vibe, come on over to the Boisé stage, as Montreal bass collective Muzik Me Luv’s SBK, Spo_Onani, Lock0ut and Steinjah (QC) come through with all flavours of bass music from the broken end of techno to experimental dancehall, jungle, deep dubstep and more. Finally, Manchester’s own Madam X (UK) will cap off the day with the latest in UK bass music.
September 15th
The Piknic stage will vibe to the sounds of Blond:ish (CA)’s house grooves on September 15th, as the Canadian party starter takes on the headline spot. Ahead of her dance music clinic, we’ll hear Montrealer Ankh (QC)’s upfront take on dance music. Meanwhile, at the Boisé stage, techno will reign, beginning with Kaz Kandy (QC)’s high energy, rave inflected tracks, followed by Jaclyn Kendall (QC)’s industrial tinged stompers, and headliner SAMA’ (PS)’sexploration of global electronic styles, a truly unique set to celebrate an incredible day of heavyweight beats.
September 22nd
This week the Piknic stage will welcome a true techno queen as Berlin’s Ellen Allien (DE) headlines a day that’s certain to be a can’t-miss clinic for lovers of European sounds. Ahead of her barnstorming set, local light Due Diligence (QC) will warm things up with some of the deepest vibes our city has to offer, so come early! For a completely different vibe, check out the Boisé stage, where Artbeat will be presenting a day full of abstract instrumental hip hop and beats. Sevdee (QC) will open with some glitchy sounds, followed by Magnanimous (QC)’s bumping rhythms. Montreal Hip Hop mainstay Killa-Jewel (QC) will roll through next with her hands-on approach to cutting and scratching, before Dead Horse Beats (QC) shows us an innovative mix of acoustic and electronic frequencies. Finally, Flamingosis (US) will thrill us with his future funk, capping off a day of thrills and new music.
September 29th
For our final Piknic of 2019, we’re pulling out all the stops at the Piknic stage, beginning with Stacey Sexton (CA)’s deep house. She’ll be followed up by the one and only DJ Boring (UK) who’ll take us even deeper into the realms of contemporary house music, setting the stage of our final headliner of 2019, Piknic favourite KiNK (BG) who’ll bless us with a live set full of energetic thrills that will keep us buzzing for the rest of the year. As for the Boisé stage, get ready for the annual Piknic Staff party! Who’s playing? We’ll let you know soon enough, so just be ready for 100% Piknic vibes courtesy of our team!
