INFOPROG - Grand Finale Bye-bye Calder + Piknic #22 | October 1-2, 2016
It’s the final countdown! Yes, this is our last Piknic weekend of the season! Gonna miss us? We’ll certainly miss you (at least until Igloofest!) Thankfully, we’re ending Piknic 2016 with a bang: a huge double Piknic full of fantastic music! Better yet: we’re going on LATE both days, extending Piknic to 10PM!
First, on Saturday October 1st, for the “Spécial Bye-bye Calder” celebrations, we’re delivering a 100% Montreal edition, with a lineup pulled from feedback by YOU, our adoring fans. The day will kick off with a huge back to back (to back!): Laura Scavo b2b Nymra & Sofisticated! This power trio will be sure to deliver the absolute best in dance grooves, drawing from tech and house of all varieties. Next, to the demand of one and all, we’re thrilled to welcome… the one and only Misstress Barbara! Yes, you asked for her and you’ll get her for one last set this season! Better yet, she’s promised us a very special set of classics old and new, including songs not heard in years, combining every style she’s played since 2003 into a 90-minute, vinyl and digital extravaganza for one last dance under the Calder. Finally, we’ll move into the sounds of one final huge back to back performance: Gino G b2b Mike Larry, who’ll bring a patented mix of dark house and techno to end this Saturday night special. This is sure to be an action packed jam full of energy, good times and memories so come early and come with friends!
Then, the very next day on Sunday October 2nd, we’re teaming up with the legendary Red Bull Music Academy to celebrate some truly outstanding names in Detroit techno, over at the Solotech stage. First up, we’ll open the day with two RBMA participants, with Mexico’s AAAA beginning the festivities with his unique mix of everything from glitch to bass to house to ambient. New Zealander and fellow academy member Race Banyon will follow him up with his finespun vocals, shuffling percussion and synthetic melodies before sceding the stage to Underground Resistance presents Depth Charge, AKA Mark Flash & Mike Banks. Techno aficionados know that Underground Resistance were the originators of a harder, politically charged Detroit Techno sound, one that perfectly predicted today’s heightened tensions and super-connectivity. We’re thrilled to present these founding members’ latest project and can’t wait to hear what they have in store of us. That alone should be enough to wet your appetite, but immediately following their performance, we’re bringing in another Detroit legend, Theo Parrish, whose soulful take on house and techno will offer sophisticated counterpoint to underground resistance’s manic energy. If this isn’t a “must see” show, we don’t know what is.
Want more? Over at the Vidéotron Mobile stage, we’ll start the day by handing the reigns to Bambii, a new school club artist pushing back against genre constraints by uniting electronic, hip-hop, house and dancehall sounds. From there, Montreal’s Pierre Kwenders will take the stage for a wild set of Afrobeats-inspired fun: if you attended his Igloofest set earlier this year, you know what you’re in for! Finally, Portugal’s Branko, founder of the Portuguese collective Buraka Som Sistema and a long-time love of the Montreal public, will close the day. His global club music will satisfy fans of organic beats and electronic textures alike, capping off our greatest season yet. See you there!
