Name: Aïsha Devi
Origin: Switzerland
Why: Her debut album, Of Matter And Spirit, released last year, was not only one the strongest, most unique releases of the year, it's the most accomplished, singular debuts by any artist in recent memory. Aïsha Devi's otherworldly combination of the spiritual and meditative sides of her cultural background with the intense physicality of bass-heavy, experimental electronic music is unlike anything else out there. Her live performance is sure to be a wholly engaging experience that you'll be unable to walk away from or forget.
When: Nocturne 1 – June 1st @ MACM
Name: Function
Origin: USA
Why: Over 25 years, Function has been defining force on the techno landscape. As a member of the hugely influential Sandwell District collective, and the first "outsider" selected as a Berghain resident, you can bet few know how to drive a room better than him. This rare live show appearence is sure to be a treat.
When: Metropolis 1 – June 3rd @ Metropolis
Name: Romare
Origin: UK
Why: Romare is a master of sample-based explorations in sound. House, jazz, hip hop, downtempo, drum and bass, and African rhythms all find themselves at home together in his productions and his live show. His 2012 album, Meditations On Afrocentrism, was a superbly accomplished collage of rich, evocative sounds, and his Canadian premiere is sure to be no different. Fans of all things Ninja Tune don't want to miss this one.
When: Nocturne 3 – June 3rd @ MACM
Name: Flanger
Origin: Chile / Germany
Why: This brilliant combo teams up Uwe Schmidt (Atom™, Señor Coconut) and Burnt Friedman, taking you on a journey through electronic music and jazz. All live, of course. Ongoing since the end of the 90s, this is the project’s first-ever North American show.
A personal favourite over at the MUTEK offices, and we trust them
When: Nocturne 5 – June 5th @ MACM
Name: Sonja Moonear
Origin: Switzerland
Why: A 15-year veteran behind the decks. Audiences, media, artists and professionals are united in their love of her sets. Her flair for reading the crowd is unmatched. She’s spun with ZIP, Ricardo Villalobos, Luciano, Dandy Jack. If you want to dance, her set’s a “can’t miss” proposition.
When: Metropolis 2 – June 4th @ Metropolis
credits : Aymeric-Giraudel
Name: Francesco Tristano
Origin: Luxembourg
Why: An excellent, classically trained pianist educated at the Juilliard School. He’s as comfortable in the concert hall as he is at Berghain with Carl Craig, and as able to play « Strings of Life » (Derrick May) and « The Bells » (Jeff Mills) on piano as he is major classic works. A genius!
