SERIES 10, SEASON 1 EPISODE 2

SYNOPSIS
To celebrate its 10^th season in grand style, Piknic decides to present a series of four shows. On Piknic’s regular site at Parc Jean-Drapeau, but not on Sundays and, above all, in the evenings.

CONTEXT
After a very Hollywood first episode (Major Lazer, confetti, dancers, a balloon and bubbles), Episode 2 is bound to be epic. British veteran producer and WARP act Squarepusher honours us with the presentation of his latest AV show.

CASTING, DISTRIBUTION AND CONTINGENCY OF THE PLOT

Kobal, Ikonika, and Squarepusher are expected to take the main roles in this second episode. But we have a last-minute casting change! British DJ Ikonika, retained for the role of 2^nd act, is booked in New York the night before, where high temperatures the next day set off a severe summer storm, canceling her flight. She arrives in Montreal too late to play her part. She is replaced by Vincent Lemieux (brilliantly, we’re told). (...)

Coming this September 16th to a Calder near us, it's Astropolis @ Piknic! But what's an Astropolis, you may ask? Well, it's an electronic-music festival from Brest - a lovable city in the northern regions of our French cousins - that takes place this year from August 16 to 19, 2012. They're on their 18th edition this year, and they've offered us a full-on red, white and blue line-up, just for us! SO, coming to Piknic on September 16th: Electric Rescue, Arno Gonzalez, and Sonic Crew! Also, as we've already announced, Oliver$ will be rounding out the MOOG stage, while Sipherdee and Pulses will be heading up the GURU stage. Just like they celebrate July 14th under the Eiffel Tower, we'll be celebrating France under the Calder... only without the fireworks. See you there!

We kick things off Saturday evening, July 28^th, with a triple-threat billing featuring a leftfield IDM legend, a British synthstep-via-house starlet, and one of Montreal’s funkier DJs. At 6pm, AFRO KATS label boss DJ Kobal hits the decks to showcase why he’s been selected to warm up crowds for the likes of Stevie Wonder, Funkadelic & the P-Funk All-Stars, and Sharon Jones. Sunday, July 29^th, sees the second day of our big birthday bash weekend ramping up with our friends at MEG coming to join us on Ile Ste Helene for a killer day of bass mutations. Presented by Nightlife.ca, the afternoon on the MOOG stage gets rolling at 2pm with Montreal’s main grime selector Son Raw, whose mad hands are equipped to mix down frenetic beats from jungle breaks to high-speed rhymes. At 5pm, Montreal’s latest international sensation and Vase Recordings founder Jacques Greene takes the tables for a joyride. At 7:15pm, Green’s LuckyMe affiliate Lunice brings a little hip-hop flare to the bass mentality. The main stage caps off at 8:30pm with one of the brightest young innovators on the American bass circuit, Machinedrum (also one-half of Sepalcure). (...)

Last Sunday, July 22, we had ourselves a quadruple. We’re not talking about a very strong drink or some fancy sports play. No. For the very first time, four Piknic events were taking place on the same day in four different cities. Piknicers in Montreal, Barcelona, Gatineau, and Quebec were groovin’ to good tunes and good vibes all afternoon under the one and only sun. It’s a little beautiful when you think about it. We’re proud, very proud of our little baby.

At the beginning of the season, we put out a call for photographers and videographers to take part in a project called “Through the Lens of…”. So here we are, the project well underway. The more creative among you have been inspired, and as a result we’re happy to present the work of each participant. Up first is Jérémy Rubier. He showed up super early, as we were setting up the event for the day (that’s unreasonably early!) and he filmed the whole day. Truly the picture of a typical Piknic day from beginning to end.

We are sorry to annonce that Sascha Dive had to cancel his presence to Piknic this Sunday due to family-related reasons. He will be replaced by Kevin Saunderson, another Detroit techno legend (and our saviour!) who also played at Piknic in 2008. Do you remember? Quite a performance!

So, we’re back from our own mini-summer vacation, and we’re ready to get back to the business of making good times for your summer vacation. After a week off and a week at the Jardin des Floralies, our return to The Calder officially marks the beginning of the second half of Piknic’s tenth season. And if you like your house music a little sophisticated, a bit eccentric, shall we say a touch classy, then this is the Sunday you’ve been waiting for!

Montreal producer and Grrreat Recordings founder Van Did gets the day rolling at 2pm with a pitched alliance of IDM, breakbeat, and electro-acoustics. Over three hours, he’ll take us from all the way from Philip Glass to Extrawelt and back. Listen here! (...)

It’s about time. This Sunday, July 22^nd, we’ll be holding our first-ever Piknic in Quebec City! At the banks of the St. Laurent River at the Beauport Bay, fans of electronic music in the Old Capital are invited to get together for this first of three events. On the bill this weekend:

When you enter the Piknic site, on the little bridge that leads to the main stage you have the MATONVU photomaton. Here, you can have your own picture taken with the mythical Calder in the background, our Piknic Electronik emblem in Montreal. With every photograph you take (and here is where the fun really
begins), you have a chance to win a trip to Barcelona to attend the Catalan version of Piknic Electronik on September 23. “WHAT? ME, GO TO PIKNIC IN BARCELONA?! HOW DO I GET IN ON THAT?” you’re probably asking yourself right now. “It’s pretty simple,” we responding telepathically back. (...)

It’s been ten days since the Montjuïc in Barcelona, the first edition of Piknic in Spain. Most exciting (THANK YOU, life) was that I had the opportunity to attend and take some photos for the remaining Montrealers who couldn’t make it (hee hee). According to our sources, nearly 3000 people showed up for the event, which had a typically Piknician vibe that our European hosts worked hard to recreate on the other side of the Atlantic. The take-away? We had a wonderful day and we drank a lot of sangria. Here it is in pics.
