Planet Break @ PikniCubik for Leucan!

Next Saturday, September 3rd, we launch PikniCubik with numerous artists from the Montreal breaks label, Planet Break! And what if we told you all those breakbeats were associated with a good cause? That’s right! The DJ’s from the collective are donating all their proceeds to the Leucan , which builds better lives for kids with cancer. Why take on this initiative? Guillaume Paiement (aka DJ Deyond and the label’s co-founder) explained to us that the Planet Break at Piknic event is the culmination of a funding drive that’s been underway since April. Here’s a little interview with a big-hearted DJ!

Where did the idea to associate with Leucan come from?
My son has had cancer since birth. Today, he’s 12 years old and he’s still fighting it. Last February the idea came to me to do a funding drive for Leucan, after I participated as a DJ in a similar fundraising event. Felix thought the idea was cool, so I asked him if he was okay with our organizing a funding drive throughout the whole summer, one that would finish up somewhere special. Of course he said yes! And the special finale... that’s Piknic!

How long have you been involved with Leucan?
Our involvement with Leucan, as parents, goes back 10 years. But as volunteers for the cause, this is the first time that I take part in direct fundraising for them.

What have you done this summer to raise funds?

We’ve participated in numerous music events since the beginning of April, among them the Panorama and Totem festivals. All our fees, as well as all proceeds from the sale of merchandise (stickers, slipmats, etc), were donated to Leucan. The grand finale for this long journey will take place at PikniCubik. We’ll have a tent onsite where we’ll be present with the Leucan team, our volunteers and all the groups who’ve helped us during this process, notably the Eresys and Cruz Control label collectives.

We here at Piknic have been touched by Guillaume’s initiative and we’ve decided to do our part and contribute. As a result, several PikniCubik activities will be associated with the fundraising efforts:

  • A portion of the profits raised from the sale of the best photos from the 2011 Piknic season will be donated to Leucan ;
  • One of the five frescos drawn by the En Masse Collective will be sold at silent auction, and the profits will be entirely donated to the foundation ;
  • For every MASSIVart silkscreen t-shirt sold at the kiosk, Piknic will donate a percentage of the sale to Leucan.

This September 3rd, come dance for a good cause with Planet Break!
