Through the lens of... Karel Chladek

This week, we dive into the photographic universe of Karel Chladek. As always, we let the artist do the introductions!

It’s a story in the moment, that’s how it’s always been. A glance at the ambiance, a look at the background, an intimate moment, and a quasi-exact replica of a perfect evening.

I arrived at Piknic without any artistic direction, without even knowing what style of photography I was going to apply. And that was the idea. The results? An album of 40 very human photographs. No staged portraits, but about twenty portraits on the go. A feeling of pleasure and freedom. About 10 pictures that set the atmosphere and give a sense of the space. Two, three photos of DJs, no more. In my opinion, the public is the most important feature in this genre of event. Piknic is innovative in terms of how they present creativity, bringing together many ages and genres. Electronic rules: it guides and inspires the mood that, for me, is one of the most interesting I’ve photographed so far. (...)

Belle p’tite job mon Boris. Il vient au Piknic depuis…2012! Première année, nous on trouve ça cute. (...)

THROUGH THE LENS OF... JEAN-SAMUEL GAUTHIER

This week, we look at the work of Jean-Samuel Gauthier! Here’s how he would introduce himself.

Whether you’re a longtime fan of Piknic Electronik or a newbie, it’s inevitable that you’ll want to come back. As you might think while going through this photo album, it’s around this thought that I set my creative course for this project.

Along the way, I tried to answer this question: what makes Piknic so unique as an event? My answer: the staff and the Piknicers. I tried to capture, on the fly, piknicers in their element, to showcase how far people will go when they catch the amusement bug. And because without a DJ there are no piknicers, I also went where piknicers are not allowed to go: behind both stages. As you’ll see, it gives a good sense of what the DJ experiences as he or she performs. (...)

THROUGH THE LENS OF... ANOUK VALLIÈRES

This week, we present you a video project by Anouk Vallières, and 18-year-old film major. We’ll let her handle the introductions!

Before I began my current studies, I had an interest in photography. At 12 years old, I bought my first camera. I soon asked my mom to install black curtains in my bedroom so I could use it as a studio. At that time, my dream was to become professional photographer and tour the world...

I entered CEGEP as a literature student, with a specialization in cinema. It was then that I really developed a taste for the seventh art.

As part of my studies, I wanted to focus on an aspect of Piknic that was close to my heart. We all know that Montreal is renowned as a multicultural city, which is what makes it a dynamic metropolis. (...)

THROUGH THE LENS OF... JAMIE COVENY

This week, we shine a light on the work of photographer Janie Coveny. But first, we’ll let him do the introductions!

A photographer of the Montreal scene for the past year, I began taking pictures of my DJ friends whenever they performed in little bars. People began to get interested in my work on Facebook, but I was limited but the amount of visibility that platform could provide. One day, I had the idea of creating my own proper website to share my work, without compromising its ambitions: livemontrealevents.com

I love taking photos and being around people. I’m always looking for the places with the best parties... and when I find them, I love get into the mix of things. I’d rather have a few laughs and drinks with my subjects than stand in the corner, taking observational pictures. That said, when I shoot artists, I’m more relaxed and artistic.

On my site, I recently added some new features, like a “box office” section for a good segment of electronic-music gigs in Montreal. You’ll also find my blog, where I share thoughts on some of the events happening in the city. More and more, I’m beginning to venture into the world of video. The future for livemontrealevents and me? The sky is the limit, as they say. We can only guess at what’s in store!
