This week's FOCUS PIKNIC is on Hissy Fit who will be performing on the GURU stage this Sunday May 26, at 3pm.

The Q&A formula is back with our new Focus Piknic! Each week, we'll shine a spotlight on one of the artists from our line-up by asking them questions on their influences, their work, and their favourite things. We're kicking things of with Creatures of Habit (Amir Javasoul and Maher Daniel) who will play this Monday at 2pm.

How did you two start playing together?

Amir Javasoul: I heard Maher play solo a few times when I moved back to Montreal from Paris. I think our styles compliment each other in the sense that we both get deep but we usually also get weird when its time to get weird. :) There's also the love of playing on vinyl that is present in both of us. We had a test run a few months ago and it proved to be very successful. So in the words of Robert Flack "Oh! Oh! Ahh! Ahh! Here it comes!!"

Maher Daniel: I could say the same thing he said but I think it was more the fact that I was attracted to his record collection and knowing that we come from the same era / background. But it really all happened for me at Amir's place during a little after hours session. We just played back to back and it kinda all clicked.

What triggered your interest in DJing?

A: Derrick Carter, DJ Harvey and Ricardo Villalobos in that chronological order. It's been over 15 years and each one of these names have had a huge impact on me as a DJ at very important moments in my career. Derrick at the start in mid-late 90s, Harvey at a very specific party in early 2000s, and Ricardo in the past 5-7 years.

M: It was my older brother for me, him and his crew were super into it and full on working the Montreal scene back in the late 90s. As that little young kid floating around I was always watching play and do their thing.

What was the first song that made you go wild?

A: In the electronic music/DJ context? Lil Louis & The World - I Called U

M: I would have to say Gus Gus - Believe (mid 16b remix)

What song makes you go wild now?

A: It constantly changes of course. Today: Jon Convex remix of Lusine - Another Tomorrow

M: Avatism feat. Forrest - Different Spaces

What makes Creatures of Habit different from your solo sets?

A: The constant grin we give each other for surprising one another with a track. Keep in mind we never ever program our mixes, so it's a big surprise for everyone, including the other guy!!

M: I could not have said better myself. I think the constant surprise aspect between us is what makes it so special.

If you could have a picnic anywhere in the world, where would you go?

A: The garden at Panoramabar after playing inside for 4+ hours.

M: He's taking the words right of my mouth!!! But I would also include Uluwatus, Indonesia.

La création audio et/ou vidéo, c’est ton affaire? Mixsessions et la SAT, en collaboration avec le Piknic Électronik, Igloofest, Elektra et Mr Musique, invitent les artistes de la relève à participer à la 4e édition de la Bourse Euterke!

Initié en 2008 à la mémoire de François Dumouchel, alias DJ Euterke, ce programme de bourse vise à soutenir la nouvelle génération de créateurs du numérique en offrant notamment un programme de formations spécialisées en art numérique et l'occasion de performer dans un contexte professionnel.

Ce qui veut dire, entre autres, que tu pourrais venir mettre du son dans les speakers du Piknic Électronik et projeter de beaux visuels sur la scène d’Igloofest. Pour tous les details des deux bourses à gagner et comment participer, c’est ici.

Voici la capsule vidéo de Jérémy Rubier! D'abord, on le laisse se présenter.

Le Piknic est à mes yeux l’icône culturelle la plus représentative de Montréal, et chaque pikniqueur est une raison de plus qui me fait aimer Montréal.

Pour honorer cet événement qui a une place spéciale dans mon cœur, j’ai décidé de vivre 24 heures à la Place de l’Homme du parc Jean-Drapeau, et montrer ainsi toutes les facettes de ce lieu incroyable.

Dans « Piknic Électronik », il y a « Piknic », et cela représente pour moi la nature, les arbres, la paix intérieure. C’est pour cela que j’ai composé une musique très douce au début, pour introduire le lieu dans son aspect animal, le tout esthétiquement très cinématographique.

L’équipe d’aménagement du Piknic arrive normalement vers 6-7 heures du matin… mais à 5hAM, j’étais déjà là! Le timelapse du début représente le passage du temps, jusqu’à l’ouverture des portes à 14 heures (soit 8 heures de montage de site). Par la suite, j’ai filmé l’événement à la manière d’un documentaire, en focusant sur les individus qui représentent le plus le Piknic, par leur sourire, leur énergie ou leurs moves de danse. Nombreux étaient mes amis présents à l’événement, ce qui a facilité ma tâche. Je suis habitué de filmer des événements extrêmement superficiels, plein de chicks aux seins en plastique. De pouvoir filmer des personnes juste belles par leur présence ou leur sourire m’a fait un bien fou.

J’ai introduit dans la vidéo des pauses où le son diégétique (cris de foule, voix de DJ, etc.) prend le dessus, pour intensifier l’immersion, et faire vivre l’événement à ceux qui n’ont pas eu la chance d’y aller.

J’espère que vous aurez autant de plaisir durant le visionnement de la vidéo que j’en ai eu à la créer.

The arrival of autumn is a moment of realization when you belatedly confirm that the season of BBQ’s, chilling in the park, and scanning the streets for pretty ladies in short skirts, is finally over. It’s also the moment when you see that you never really made it through half of your TO DO list for the summer. On 33’s list, we had set aside the Piknic for September 23^rd. We chose the 23^rd because there is no 33^rd on the calendar. What can you do, other than work with what you have?

We’re going to have to report what really happened, we fretted. So a big pat on the back to the boss for selecting DJs who tried to help us forget the temperature. Mission accomplished, guys. We particularly tripped over the GURU stage, where Montrealers J.A.S.S. offered up an explosion of tropical and jazzy rhythms. All that was missing was a glass of Sangria to feel like we were at Piknic @ Barcelona instead. And what to say of Pillowtalk’s disco-funk, other than that every piknicer had an ass shaking to their beats!
